Tom Hanks teams up with Paul Greengrass for "Captain Phillips"

Category: Oscar Worthy

It has been a long time since Tom Hanks has grace the big screen and now he is back with a BANG. Teaming up with Paul Greengrass in this biopic is nothing short of SPECTACULAR. Paul Greengrass known for his shaky camera work brought us a movie about the heroic action of one Captain Phillips. Although the real life captain was apparently surrounded by controversies brought about by individuals none other than his crew claiming that the former has allegedly place them in jeopardy in the first place. But hey, this is not about that.

The movie instantly dives to the timeline from the events prior to the capture. It didn't give us any substantial background on his life and family. The film basically focuses on the events and the actions of that of Captain Phillips. He was shown to be observant and persistent in making the commercial vessel and its crew safe and secure. The antagonist of this movie played by Barkhad Abdi, who in my opinion, is a gem. I do not know how Paul Greengrass was able to discover this guy but I sure hope he can have an acting career because he is great in this film and I sincerely think nobody can play his part better than him.

When the film goes to the chase scene, that's where the film REALLY started. It's very stressful, intense, and you are unconsciously holding your breath while the scene unfolds in front of you. I do believe that there are certain films that can help you become more insightful and resourceful. This is one of them. The steps that the main character took was measured, precise and key to making not only his crew safe but also the commercial vessel from being taken. I also have to give props to his second-in-command because without him, I do not think they would have been successful in the first place. There are definitely moments when you question certain things like there were only 4 armed men and there are about 20 of them, why can't they try to overcome the pirates? But you have to agree, that sometimes when threat to your life arrives, you certainly have to think twice before you risk it.

With Paul Greengrass direction, this biopic was raised to another level. Although I am not a huge fan of his cinematography techniques, I still love him because of the rawness and unpretentious way he directs his actors. Plus his scenes is always the best. Heart thumping and basically incredibly intense and stressful.

This film marks another brilliant performance from Tom Hanks. The rescue scene where he is being treated is by far one of the best acting I have seen from him EVER. That to me proves that he deserves at least an Academy nomination for his portrayal. You really felt everything he is trying to convey.

This movie is another great one this year along with Gravity. I highly recommend everyone to watch it. Great job!

The Walking Dead Episode(s) Review: S04E02 and S04E03

Snapshot from Ep. 4x02/03

Episode 4x02: Infected/ Episode 4x03: Isolation

So far so good. What I love about these two episodes is that it tries to develop individual characters and creating an interesting plot which Season 2 previously failed. It didn't try to fit all the elements in one pacing but instead it slowly builds up its momentum providing enough substance, quality storytelling and gore which interestingly enough you don't get to see in zombie movies nowadays.

In Episode 2, the story took quite a unpredictable turn with providing another twist that endlessly put the plight of our survivors into the edge. Providing that the people has created a community that enables them to at least try and live a seemingly normal life in a bizarre and dangerous situation. We see how the events has helped bring closer the people and have functional roles to help further their survival. It is noted also that even children are given responsibilities and expose them at a very early age to learn to survive and even KILL the closest people to them when they turn.

Episode 3 is probably one of the best episodes from the whole series. Aside from the hordes of zombies, the episode has plenty of heart and you feel for the characters and understand their position and predicament better. Especially Hershel. The man has become an anchor somewhat by the whole group, gives them perspective and helps them maintain their humanity despite the circumstances.

It's hard to make a review of the episodes without giving too much information. But because there are so many twists, I do not want to spoil it for you. On the other hand, these two are a MUST- SEE!

I hope the producers, writers, and show runner can keep giving us quality zombie TV. I think the series is back in full force. Great episodes. Quite excited for the next one. I hope it is as good as the promo trailer.

Downright Hilarious and Witty " DON JON"

Category: Popcorn Movie

I still remember one of the first movies of Joseph Gordon Lewitt that I love so much when I was young, Angels in the Outfield, then as a teenager, 10 Things I Hate about You. Who would've thought that this child actor has actually have it takes to maintain longevity in his career not only as an actor but now as an up and coming director.

I only saw the trailer for Don Jon as an accident. I am one of those people who checks out Official Trailers for movies showing this year and incoming years in Youtube. I stumbled upon its trailer and decided to check it out.  I was laughing by the end of the trailer and thought, "maybe there is something about this movie worth checking out especially with the plot that the director decided to explore."  PORN ADDICTION! Hahaha! Now that is something you don't get to see and watch everyday in the movie theater. I immediately thought bringing some of my closest girlfriends to watch it with me.

The movie starts with a bang! It immediately dives into the world of Don Jon. It didn't missed anything. The script and the acting is so on-point and witty. Plus the actors are so hilarious in the movie especially Tony Danza. This guy is such a comedic genius! His character is tailor- made for him and even try to steal any scene that he is in it. The soundtrack is another highlight. It gives the scene additional character and identity that when you hear it you immediately knew what the lead star is doing. The way the movie is written is simple but one thing that made it great is that it has substance. It went to a deeper level that made you appreciate it more.

I highly recommend this movie be watched amongst friends. To see your friends' reaction is another plus and it makes the whole experience better and more entertaining. I am looking forward to another film from Joseph Gordon Lewitt. Very promising from who I believe is one of the best actors of his generation. Kudos!

Not even The Great Robert De Niro can save "The Family"

Category: Nothing Special

I cannot believe that the man responsible in revitalizing the career of Liam Neeson as an action star is also responsible for directing this bland and unforgettable movie. Anyone heard of the movie, TAKEN? Yes, same person.

The Family is led by some of the industry's veteran and respected actors. When I first saw the trailer, it reminded me of the movie RED. Fun and pure entertainment starred by actors who are known for serious acting for serious, Oscar Worthy movies. It caught my attention because it looks just plain fun. I should've known better than place this movie on a pedestal. But can you blame me? Just read the credits. And have I mentioned that it is also co- produced by Martin Scorsese? Unfortunately, not all that caliber can save this one.

I honestly think that the premise has so much potential. It has so many angles that it can tackle but instead they came up with such an average and predictable plot. The movie can be dragging at times and also the climactic scene is so irritating that when the name LUC BESSON showed up in the credits as the director, I just couldn't contain my disappointment. The members of the family are known for their "revenge" tactics that when the time it really needs for them to use all those moves, they fell flat.

Moreover, I believe that Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones could've been given better material and I cannot believe they decided to star in this movie. Diana Agron may be pretty in the screen but she looks like a talentless twit in this one unfortunately. Another downside? There is no subtitle! Given that there were plenty of scenes spoken in FRENCH! So I have no idea what there were talking about.

Needless to say, I do not recommend this movie. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

A riveting look following the events surrounding JFK's assasination with "Parkland"

Category: Thought Provoking

I do love historical dramas and "Parkland" is no exception. Although it took me a while to decide to watch it since I expect that a movie such as this one requires my undivided attention and nothing less especially if the movie entails plenty of dialogue.

The movie is composed of an ensemble cast and the premise itself gives something new by focusing on the people that are directly involved in the historical event. The cinematography reminds me a lot of a Paul Greengrass movie (i.e. Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum). For those who aren't aware, the camera work is basically quite shaky. The purpose of the director might be to give the movie a certain rawness to make it look more realistic and believable which surprisingly he did.

Since the movie have different angles to tackle, I am fairly surprised that the movie does not seem cramped and congested. I have to give props to the editor because the movie maintained its fluidity and the audience's interest the whole time. All of the actors were great in their respective characters especially James Badge Dale who played Lee Harvey Oswald's brother.

This movie may not be for everyone but for those who loves movies with plenty of substance, history, great acting and story, then this is for you.

"Carrie" remake may not have superseded its Predecessor but it surely can stand on its own

Category: Popcorn Movie

First of all, I am a huge fan of Chloe Grace Moretz. Second, I love the original starring Sissy Spacek. I actually did not understand why they have to do a remake of this movie because the original was absolutely spellbinding. Basically, the reason I wanted to watch the movie is because of Chloe and the great Ms. Julianne Moore and also the fact that the trailer caught my eye so I was curious what "new" interpretation they can do with this remake.

The plus side of this movie is its two lead actresses. Julianne Moore as always was mesmerizing as terrifyingly creepy mother of Carrie. She can give Piper Laurie (the mother from the original) a run for her money. Chloe Grace Moretz is too good- looking, I believe, as Carrie White. Although, she is still one of today's most gifted young actresses. She took the role in a different approach by making Carrie more assertive, intuitive, and current. And lastly, the iconic prom scene, it is not as horrifying as the original but the effects are better in this one. Downside? The original is a classic and one of the best horror movies ever made.

Although, there are pretty much nothing new in this movie I still suggest that people give it a chance especially for those who have watched the original. The movie boasted a very talented cast and people who previously watched the 1976 film should avoid comparing it so they can truly enjoy this movie. For those who haven't, I believe you will enjoy this remake.

A sure hit for Star Cinema's latest offering with "She's the One"

Category: Popcorn RomCom

I may be biased but I do love a good story with great storytelling especially if it is a romantic comedy. Star Cinema is celebrating their 20th anniversary and "She's the One' is one of their latest offerings. The teaser itself is immediately generating "the kilig factor" especially for hopeless romantic like myself and it does help that you have two good- looking and very talented actors/ actresses as leads: Dingdong Dantes and Bea Alonzo

Fortunately for Star Cinema, one of the most sought after actors is from the rival network and he was given permission to do a movie opposite the hottest leading woman from their network. Completing the movie credit is one of the country's hottest up and coming young actors of his generation. I think that equates a sure box office hit for Star Cinema.

The pacing of the movie is great and the chemistry was smoking! The thing that really caught my eye was the acting of the two leads. They were so natural. It was like watching another person's life the whole time without them being aware of it. I have to give props to the director. I haven't actually been aware of her until this movie. The way the movie was executed and edited is brilliant. You never noticed the time and the movie is about 2 hours long! Although the movie is without imperfection. First is the second leading man: Enrique Gil. Do not get me wrong, the guy is HOT!!! Unfortunately, he needed to tone down his "James Dean" look because it is too overdone. I hope his acting coach can improve this "technique" of his. You know "less is more". Second, a scene that I believe shouldn't have been part of the movie. It is too corny. (You'll know what I am talking about when you watched it!)

Overall, the movie reminds me of another Filipino movie "Sana Maulit Muli" starring Aga Muhlach and Lea Salonga. It was that good! I highly recommend it. As a matter of fact, I am going to watch it again. Hoping for a sequel.

Season Opener of the Walking Dead (Season 4)

Pics from Episode 4x1

Episode 4x01: 30 Days Without an Accident

This blog will be nothing without writing about Zombies!!!! My FAVORITE!!!!

As usual any subsequent season opener can never live up to the pacing and execution of the great Frank Darabont for the pilot episode of this series. However, after watching a disappointing Season 2, hopeful and promising Season 3, the much- anticipated Season 4 has finally arrived.

The start of the show is definitely a far cry from the opener of the previous seasons. From the pacing and tone, it immediately distances itself from the usual atmospheric build-up that any die hard fans of the series are used to.

Rick Grimes is joined by a couple of new faces this season aside from the remaining survivors from his group. The prison is now hounded by walkers coming from all directions. The leader of the group seemingly losing his edge, the rest trying to find ways to make the place more self- sufficient and consistently looking for places for supplies. The usual theme possibly for all post-apocalyptic scenario.

Although parts of the episode seemed to be dragging, it still showed plenty of Walkers and action to please die hard fans such as myself. The ending of the episode looks to be promising and intriguing. Hopefully, the pacing will pick- up while getting some extended character development without compromising the whole season.

"Rocky" and "Terminator" teams up with an "Escape Plan"

Category: Popcorn Movie

Some of the first movies I remembered watching were Rocky, Terminator 2, and Die Hard with my dad who bought VHS or Laser Disk way back when.  My father is without a doubt the single person who influenced me into loving movies from a very young age. So each time there is a movie starring either Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Bruce Willis, that movie is automatically reserved.

The first time I saw the trailer for Escape Plan, I thought, this looks promising, but I am a little apprehensive since watching The Expendables series requires me to lower my expectations. Needless to say, I know I'll have a great time since my dad would enjoy this either way.

The first few minutes in the movie was fast-paced definitely different from the current movies Sly has been choosing to star in. The story is unique although predictable. Certain parts was a little dragging but the overall story was not as shallow as I have expected at first. Jim Caviezel as an antagonist was believable in his portrayal but do not expect much from Sly and Arnold. If you are looking for action sequences, this is fully packed with it and another plus side, the movie does not look "low budgeted". Highlight of the film is the lead actors' chemistry. Arnold's humor definitely came across the screen in this film.

Given that the two lead actors are past their prime, you can help but applaud their tenacity and the way they choose their movies to ensure longevity in their respective careers. I hope they keep choosing the right ones to make them relevant.

Overall, die hard fans of both actors would love this movie. Watch it in the movie theater if you have money to spare but if you don't, I suggest you wait for the DVD or Bluray or even HBO.

The movie "Gravity" starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney

Category: Oscar Worthy

I always go to Wikipedia.com to see what movie my favorite actors, actresses, and directors are going to do next. When I read Alfonso Cuaron directing a new movie, I didn't much care about which actors are going to be in it. All I know is he is one of the best directors in modern cinema. The first time I saw the teaser trailer for the movie, "Gravity" all I can say was, "I gotta watch this!" and I did last October 5, 2013.

My verdict? WOW!!!!! It's definitely the best movie I've watched this year. The cinematography and the special effects is by far one of the best I've seen in my life.  I felt like I was part of the movie, or I am in a simulation like something you ride in Universal Studio. The only thing lacking is for the seats to move. Another highlight from the movie is the crisp screenplay and the execution of the storylines from the respective actors, especially Sandra Bullock. KUDOS to her! I didn't think she deserved her OSCAR from the movie "The Blind Side" (although she was good in it but hey there were better contenders from that category. Just Saying!) but I sincerely hope she gets at least an Academy nomination for her portrayal in this movie. It's the first movie I've watched that I felt that I've forgotten she even starred in "Miss Congeniality"

If you are thinking on waiting for the DVD or Bluray, I suggest you watched this in a movie theater because it is sure worth your money.

Warning: Don't sit from or near the front rows. Get seats from the middle or even a little farther away if you easily get nauseated. The movie can make you a little dizzy in certain parts. Other than that enjoy and have fun!!!

Love Love Love Movies

My life basically revolves in 4 things: Family, Friends, Work and MOVIES!!! My pastime is well watching movies, whether it's classic, modern, High Budgeted or just plain B- Movies. But movies is probably the one thing (aside from my immediately family and friends) that I cannot live without.

I don't know why I am going to start this blog but friends and family often asked me if a movie is superb, average, or just plain bad. Since I am basically a self-professed "fanatic" of movies, I thought why not give it a try making movie reviews of movies I've watched, or planning to watch and maybe help people out there choose from the several movies that are showing, etc.
